So I went to work out yesterday and in the workout roommate the club house of our subdivision, there are like 8 large TVs.

One of them showed the men’s finals at the Australian Open Tennis tournament.

And it reminded me of when back in the days I was working as a college students for some German TV Stations as a Cable boy.

Meaning I was helping set up cameras and TV Towers at Sports events and got to watch the games and on top of it was paid for it.

One time the Davis Cup came to a town nearby and I was hired to work with the TV station which meant I got to spend 3 full days around some of the BEST and Most  Successful Tennis Professionals in the world.

And while I worked out I had some time to think about what makes these guys great.

Yes, they are talented but I also noticed they had like 5 coaches around them.

Particularly Boris Becker, who at that time was #1 in the world and who I was able to hang out with and see close-up all the time for three days, constantly was checking with his coaches to get small adjustments.

I had almost forgotten about that until I saw the exact same thing yesterday.

The world’s #1 and #2 were fighting each other and you could see the coaches on the bench cheering and trying to give him secret signals on what to change.

You would think that once you are the best in the world you don’t need a coach anymore?

WRONG.

Without exception, every top performer in the world of Sport and Business who stayed there for a long time ALWAYS had one or many coaches.

I just finished breakfast and reading the newspaper (sports section) where I came across a really stunning article that made me think.

The article was about the San Francisco 49ers Quarterback Alex Smith.
Here is a guy who was drafted #1 in the 2005 draft (so over 6 years ago).

Many say he was a bust in the draft, a QB who was overrated!
Many say he never reached his potential!

But if you look at it in detail how could he reach his potential!

In his early 20s he was
-          Made a star by being picked #1 in the draft
-          Lost his starting job to others after a few bad games
-          Benched and belittled by many of his coaches
-          Booed at many games by 10s of thousands of people
-          Made fun of by the media

And to make things worse he had to play in the shadow of former greats like Joe Montana and Steve Young.

You wonder how he could ever have been able to make it in that environment.

Would you have made it, with everyone telling you that you SUCK, and that you don’t have what it takes?

And the entire country making fun of you?

Heck, many people might have done worse than just faltering.

But not Alex Smith.

In this article what they credit for his success is this:

“What he was really relying upon to survive in the NFL was his mental and emotional strength, toughness, whatever you want to call it…He is so mentally strong, so resilient, refuses to let the demons affect him negatively”

Today Alex Smith will be playing for the 49s in the NFC Championship Game as their starting QB!!

How did he do that?

He never gave up and finally found a coach who knows how to get the best out of him!!!

He is thriving.
Was it he coach who gets all the credit?
Or was it a combination of his perseverance AND finding a good coach?

I think it was the latter.

No coach would have been able to help Alex if he had given up on himself.

Only because he still WANTED to make it happen, he still had the drive to show the world that he can make it, did
he persevere and earn his right to be the Starting Quarterback again!

Will you persevere, or are you giving up at the slightest hurdle, negative comment or distraction?
Will you retreat from your goals of Land for Pennies investing or any other form of Real Estate Investing if the people around you start doubting yourself? When they start telling you you can’t do it?

I sure hope you will continue on, and ignore the negative voices because at the end when you are a successful land flipper and real estate investor it is all worth it!

And there is no worse regret than not having tried it all and given it your all!

Here is a young man who is showing the world what perseverance and finding the right teacher can do.

Use him as an example to keep your own goals in front of you and don’t ever let them get out of sight.
Don’t ever let anyone else talk you out of them. You ARE good enough to make it and you will make it
if you just follow the steps and shut out the negativity out there!

Today is thanksgiving 2011,

I just wanted to wish you all a very HAPPY THANKSGIVING (aka turkey day)

I hope you are spending it with your families in person or if not then at heart with them.

I am spending the day with my wife, daughter and mother in law  )

as you spend the day either enjoying or dreading having to hang out with the family, I would like to
remind you of the deeper sense of the day.

Both my wife and I being Immigrants from Honduras and Germany respectively, we had to first learn to
appreciate the meaning of Thanksgiving.
But now that we have a daughter we have embraced it and really taken in its meaning.

And if you think back to the first settlers, they truly gave thanks for having survived the first year in an
environment without Houses, Roads, Bathrooms or grocery Stores.
Imagine their dreams when first having set foot onto this land.
their dreams must have been truly GRAND!!!

And guess what, over time many accomplished it.
and the meaning of the “Land of opportunity” still holds true.

It reminds me of something said by Nelson Mandela which goes as follows:

“There is no passion found in playing small – in settling for a life
that is less than what you are capable of living” – Nelson Mandela

Therefore, on this day I want to encourage you to play big, bigger than you have ever thought posible.
It might not happen over night but it will happen over time.

Whatever it is that you have set up as your goals, keep an open mind because you never know how it will show up for you.

And what has worked for me is to not set your goals on a firm $$ number but instead setting my goal on what it takes to play full out.

Because I promise you one thing. If you do everything you do at 110% and leave nothing on the table  (and we all know that if you do something at only 100% you still have something left to give) you have only one way to go and that is up towards success.

For me I look at life a little different.Particularly on days like today, where I give THANKS for what amazing life I already have:
I am often thinking that whenever that day might come and I am to leave this earth, i want to be able to say “I have played full out, I have done what I wanted to do, and I have lived a GREAT live”

one of my mentors, Keith Cunningham, said something along the lines of: “the Definition of Hell would for many be to, as the person we are, meet the person we could have been”
I agree with that, and because of that, at the end of the day, I wish for all of you (and for me too) to have a life where we can meet the person we could have been and see that this person is very close to who we became.

And every day that I make a decision to become more of that person or when I can help you move in that direction is a day for me to be grateful for life.

And today is a day to give thanks for whatever progress we have made on that path. At least that is what I do on this day.
